the town of adairsville, georgia, about 60 miles north of atlanta. one man was killed when a tree crashed through his mobile home. the storm tossed trucks around the interstate like match sticks. >> i cracked the door and it didn't even going me time. it had me flinging on that door. when it came inside it tossed me straight into the bedroom where the little bathroom is and i stayed in there for a little while. it seemed like it would never be over. >> the system spawned least seven tornadoes through the southeast yesterday. damage was reported from georgia to virginia. another man was killed in tennessee. meteorologist david bernard of our miami station wfor is following the severe weather system. >> it's been a rough 48 hours for the eastern two-thirds of the country. in fact, we can take a look at the map that shows ought of the storm reports since tuesday. those blue areas, over 500 reports of wind damage across the midwest and southeastern united states, and within those, we have a couple dozen reports of tornadoes where we had a damaging tornado part

for today. in the southeast we're going to look for dry weather, cool, 52 in atlanta, 53 in memphis. but, of course we head north, and that's where the bitter chill will be. we'll continue to see strong lake-effect snows continuing. cleveland, only 18 today, 16 in pittsburgh. new york city, we're looking for a high of around 21. only 18 in boston. a look at montreal won't get above zero, forecast minus 6 there. across the midwest, especially across chicago, not a lot better. a high of 24. minneapolis, it's only going to be near 8 degrees. you can see the warmer weather across the plains. again, it's been pretty quiet in the midwest, but a new storm headed in and rain in portland and seattle and snow in the mountains. i'm david bernard, cbs news, miami. >>> well, this morning the house is expected to vote on a temporary extension of the nation's debt limit. the republican-sponsored bill would extend the u.s. borrowing limit for three months. without the extension the u.s. would be unable to pay its bills, including unemployment benefits and social security. the white

of our cbs miami station wfor is following the cold track. >>> in atlanta we may start with freezing rain, but by this afternoon we're looking at a high of 48. that's all going to change over to liquid. if we travel north of there through the carolinas into the atlantic, d.c., as far north as philadelphia, light to moderate snow is expected today. mainly one to two inches in most spots. this is not going to be major storm and is going to move out by the evening hours. highs in the mid-20s from new york to boston. cleveland after some morning snows will see an afternoon high temperature of 20 degrees. across the midwest it stays cold. and chicago at 29. 16 in minneapolis. dry across the plains. and out west it's still raining. in fact, another rainy day in los angeles, and that rain extends all the way along the coast to portland and seattle. so, again, light snows in the east, but, again, that's probably not going to be a major storm and will end by this evening. i'm david bernard for the cbs news in miami. >>> the senate is expected to vote monday on a $50.50 bi

the atlanta area. that could mean some travel delays for the big airport there. if we follow the front to north, we're looking at flood watches for a good part of the northeast, strong to severe thunderstorms possible this evening and tonight as that front approaches the coastline. on the opposite side of that, we're looking at cold air spilling into the midwest. the rain we saw yesterday in chicago is going to end as a little bit of light snow with temperatures in the upper 30s. very cold in the plains with highs in the teens and 20s. out west it looks pretty quiet especially in southern california. not bad, l.a. 65. look for rain in the northwest. seattle and portland kind of dreary and temperatures in the 40s. i'm david bernard for cbs news, miami. >>> overseas now, a police inspector says penny pinching may have caused that deadly nightclub fire in brazil. at least 234 people, mostly students, died in sunday morning's file. the inspector says the band used cheap outdoor flares for their pyrotechnic display instead of the much more expensive indoor flares. i
